Access Bank Hosts Professor Wole Soyinka In Ghana

Access Bank Ghana, in line with its social responsibility focus on supporting education, arts & culture in Ghana, has hosted one of Africa’s greatest playwrights and authors, Professor Wole Soyinka.

The 1986 Nobel laureate’s visit to Ghana forms part of the bank’s drive to inspire and nurture the youth to cultivate critical thinking and creativity in literature and the arts in general.

Prof Soyinka, who is also the first African to win the Nobel Prize, was in Ghana as the Guest of Honour for the Annual Speech and Prize giving day of Ghana International School for which Access Bank was a title sponsor.

Addressing guests and students at the event, Prof Soyinka used the platform to inspire and encourage students to strive to improve their communities through little acts of kindness that is guaranteed to impact one life at a time.

He noted: “Education remains a critical aspect in the development of any nation as it unlocks the thinking canals of our youth. However, a holistic education that encompasses the ability to help children appreciate their humanity and show empathy to their fellow human beings is what guarantees a prosperous nation.”

Mr Dolapo Ogundimu, Managing Director of Access Bank, assigned the special duty of introducing Prof Soyinka, highlighted the values that has contributed to the success of the Laureate.

He drew parallels between the Bank’s value of excellence and the Writer’s achievements.

“Our Special Guest of Honour happens to be one of the finest sons Nigeria has produced for export. Recently adjudged “Bank of the Year” and “Best Bank in Corporate Social Responsibility” at the Ghana Banking Awards, our Bank is continuously striving to emulate his steps,” he said.

“Hence, our vision to be the world’s most respected African Bank. I know for a fact that the presence of this great man amongst us today will inspire many young ones into doing many great things; in producing more of his kind in this new generation.”

Over the years, Access Bank (Ghana) has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable business practices driving profitable, sustainable growth that is also environmentally responsible and socially relevant.

The Bank has committed resources to improve wellbeing in key areas such as education, health and social improvement across several communities in Ghana earning the bank “Best Bank in Corporate Social Responsibility” in 2010 and at the recent Ghana Banking Awards.
