A Ghanaian philanthropist, Nana Appiantua IV, has been nominated to receive four special awards from the Academy of the Universal Global Peace (AUGP), in the United Kingdom on July 7, for her good work in the Ghanaian society.
Nana Appiantua IV, who is also the Ninfa Hemaa of Assin Fosu, has for the past seven years been promoting child health care, education, community awareness creation, family income generation and sustainability within some communities in the Central and Northern regions.
Currently, under the Nana Appiantua Foundation, she is single-handedly sponsoring 15 Ghanaian needy but brilliant students from the primary school level through to the university level, with one of her beneficiaries, being at the Law School.
Her philanthropic work has thus been recognised internationally so the World Governing Council of Board of Governors of AUGP is scheduled to honour her with a Doctorate Honaris Causa, Human Excellency Award, Peace Builder Award and Leadership Award.
The award ceremony would take place at the University of Westminster in the UK, and Nana Appiantua would be honoured with a doctorate of leadership and humanitarian work and thus place her in pool of global personalities such as Hollywood legends, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, Heads of States, government officials, lawyers, scientists, professors, cardinals, and judges with similar credentials.
Nana Appiantua, who would be honoured alongside 19 others, would be granted the award at the University by Dr Madhu Krishan, named after an Eminent Scientist, who is also the Patriarch Founder and Chairman of the AUGP; and Dr Pauline Long, President and Founder of the BEFFTA Award.
Speaking to the GNA in an interview in, Accra on Thursday, Nana Appiantua said she started her philanthropic work as a hobby, realising the need to care for some needy but brilliant students at her local Methodist Church in Assin Fosu.
She said that gesture later became an everyday event, as she came in contact with many brilliant students within her community and beyond.
She, therefore, channeled all her proceeds as a Clearing and Forwarding Agent at the Tema Habour into caring for her beneficiaries.
She said, at present, some of the beneficiaries were in the Adisadel College, Sekondi College and St Augustine’s SHS, while others were at the Islamic University, University of Development Studies in Tamale, the University of Ghana Law School, and another at the Polytechnic.
Nana Appiantua said she was only advised to register her Foundation last year, after working for seven years in also providing health care for children with HIV and AIDS, and initiating water project through the purification of ground water for safe consumption to residents.
She said her vision was to help bridge the inequality gaps through the provision of social interventions to community members.
On her impression about the award to be received, Nana Appiantua IV said: “I’m very happy and privileged to be recognised for the award”.
She, however, urged all to do their bits to ensure that the needy and vulnerable in society were well catered for; adding that, organisations like her Foundation should be supported to continue with their good works.
Nana Appiantua IV would leave for the UK on July 3. The she would be honoured at gala awards event to be hosted at the Dorchester Hotel.
