Ghana will host the Global Network for the Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence Building Systems (GLOBELICS) 16th Conference in Accra from October 24th to 26th.
The Conference would be hosted by the Council for Industrial and Scientific Research – Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (CSIR-STEPRI with The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) as the main sponsorship.
It would be held under the theme: “Innovation, Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Strengthening Institutions for Greater Relevance, Effectiveness and Inclusivity”.
GLOBELICS is an open and diverse community of scholars working on innovation and competence building in the context of economic development.
The major purpose of the network is to contribute to building capacity and create a forum for exchange worldwide in the innovation and development research field.
The Conference, which is an annual event, is a natural incubator for international research projects and a meeting place where project groups with worldwide participation meet, present and coordinate their research work.
Dr George Owusu Essegbey, the immediate past Director, CSIR-STEPRI, speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said the Conference, would bring together over 300 leading and young scholars from all over the world.
He said the Conference aims at deliberating on issues relating to innovation, economic growth and sustainable development.
He said the Conference would have 15 sub-themes which would constitute the tracks for presentation of papers.
Dr Essegbey said in all about 270 papers would be presented by scholars coming from all over the world and in diverse disciplines.
He said Ghana is the fourth African country after South Africa, Senegal and Ethiopia to host the GLOBELICS annual Conference.
He said the Conference would present an opportunity to showcase Ghana, a politically stable country, which was currently undergoing a number of transformations to modernise its economy and create jobs.
He said the output of the Conference would strategise for enhancing development in the developing world through innovation and competence building; stating that Ghana would benefit from the opportunities for networking with acclaimed knowledge institutions and individuals.
He said in addition, the output of the Conference is expected to contribute immensely to the options of the government in achieving this flagship projects.
Dr Essegbey said the Conference would combine plenary sessions, presentations of research papers in parallel tracks, thematic panel sessions, special sessions, poster presentations, symposia and exhibition on industrial research in Ghana and Africa, as well as innovative start-ups presentations, sightseeing and cultural tours.
