Ghana will join the global community in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) with a weeklong series of events from October 18 to 24, 2025, on the local theme: “UN@80: Ghana and the UN – Shared Responsibility for a Better Tomorrow.”
The global theme for the celebration is “UN at 80: Building Our Future Together.”
The commemoration, jointly organized by the Government of Ghana and the United Nations in Ghana, seeks to celebrate eight decades of global cooperation, peacebuilding, and sustainable development while reflecting on Ghana’s enduring partnership with the international body.
Over the past 80 years, the United Nations has served as the world’s foremost multilateral institution, providing a platform for nations to address shared global challenges such as poverty, inequality, conflict, and climate change.
Ghana’s affiliation with the UN began in 1957 when it became the 81st member state shortly after gaining independence.
Since then, the country has played a leading role in advancing the UN’s values through peacekeeping, diplomacy, and advocacy for global solidarity.
The weeklong programme, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, would begin on Saturday, October 18, with a symbolic peace walk from the Forecourt of the Accra International Conference Centre through principal streets of the capital.
The event will rally citizens and partners toward collective action in sustaining peace and security within Ghana and beyond, it said.
On Tuesday, October 21, a tree-planting exercise dubbed “Eight Trees for Eight Decades” will take place at eight designated locations nationwide to highlight Ghana’s and the UN’s shared commitment to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and ecosystem restoration.
A high-level dialogue will follow on Wednesday, October 22, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the convening of government officials, diplomats, youth leaders, civil society organisations, and private sector stakeholders to deliberate on the future of multilateralism and sustainable finance amid global economic uncertainty and shifting power dynamics.
The discussions are expected to generate actionable ideas for building a more inclusive and resilient global order.
On Thursday, October 23, the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD) will host a public lecture featuring experts and thought leaders who will reflect on Ghana’s longstanding
partnership with the UN and explore how international cooperation can help address emerging global challenges.
The week of activities will culminate on Friday, October 24, with the official United Nations Day celebration at the Forecourt of the State House which will include the hoisting of the UN and Ghana flags, followed by a photo exhibition chronicling eight decades of collaboration in peacekeeping, development, and humanitarian work.
The government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the ideals of peace, human rights, and sustainable development as Ghana joins the world in celebrating the UN at 80, the Ministry said.
