Ablakwa announces billion-dollar Qatari interest in new Ghana city project and western corridor rail network

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says he has secured an investment pledge from a Qatari businessman for President John Mahama’s planned new city and rail projects.

Mr Ablakwa said he has already met Sheikh Mansour bin Jabor bin Jassim Al Thani, Chairman of Al Mansour Holdings, during an official visit to Qatar on November 13 and 14, 2025.

He made the announcement in a Facebook post on Sunday, November 16, 2025.

The minister travelled to Doha at the invitation of the Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.

Mr Ablakwa stated that Sheikh Mansour, a member of the Qatari royal family, offered support for President Mahama’s plans for a new city, the western corridor rail network, a gold refinery, regional hospitals and regional airports.

He added that Al Mansour Holdings intends to visit Accra in the coming days to continue discussions with government officials.

Sheikh Mansour toured parts of Africa in August 2025, during which he made investment pledges in six countries.

These included US$21 billion to the Democratic Republic of Congo, US$20 billion to Mozambique, US$19 billion each to Zambia and Zimbabwe, and US$12 billion each to Botswana and Burundi.
