Ghana calls for immediate protection of ECOWAS observers in Guinea-Bissau

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for the urgent protection of ECOWAS election observers and foreign nationals in Guinea-Bissau following a military takeover that has unsettled the country’s political transition.

In a statement issued on November 26, 2025, the Ministry described the action by elements of the Bissau-Guinean military as an unconstitutional move that threatens the outcome of the recent elections.

According to the Ministry, the presidential and legislative polls held on Sunday progressed peacefully, but the military stepped in before the announcement of results, which had been scheduled for November 27.

The Ministry said it was troubled by what it described as an attempt to derail the process, noting that any dispute arising from the election should be handled through recognised legal channels.

“The will of the people must be respected, and any concerns should be dealt with through the established procedures,” the statement said.

Attention was also drawn to the safety of members of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission who are still in the country.

The Government urged the military authorities in Bissau to safeguard the observers and allow them to move freely as the situation unfolds.

The Ministry also called for the protection of civilians and foreign nationals, cautioning that tension in parts of the capital could worsen if restraint is not observed.

The government appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that may heighten the unrest.
