Canadian High Commission inaugrates cooperative nursery in Bekwai

The Canadian High Commission to Ghana has inaugurated a new cooperative nursery in Adokwai, Bekwai, as part of efforts to advance climate-smart agriculture and improve the livelihoods of Ghanaian farmers.

The initiative, delivered with support from the Government of Canada through the TogetHER project and implemented by SOCODEVI–Ghana, is designed to strengthen sustainable farming practices while enhancing economic opportunities for smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth.

The nursery will support the production of improved seedlings and shade trees, contributing to climate resilience and long-term productivity within cocoa-growing and food-producing communities.

The High Commission underscored Canada’s commitment to inclusive agricultural development, noting that climate-smart interventions remain central to building resilient rural economies. The project aligns with broader development cooperation between Canada and Ghana, with a focus on food security, gender equality and sustainable livelihoods.

SOCODEVI–Ghana, a Canadian-based cooperative development organisation, has been working closely with local farmer groups to strengthen cooperative governance, promote environmentally responsible farming methods and improve access to finance. Through the TogetHER project, the organisation supports farmers to adapt to climate change while increasing household incomes and economic participation at the community level.

The Adokwai nursery is expected to serve as a hub for farmer training, seedling distribution and cooperative collaboration, reinforcing Ghana’s climate adaptation goals within the agricultural sector. The initiative reflects a shared commitment by Ghana and Canada to partnership-driven development that empowers local communities and promotes sustainable growth.
