The Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Embassy of Mexico in Ghana have renewed efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation and revitalise existing sister-city relations between Accra and Mexican cities.
The renewed engagement followed a courtesy call by the Mexican Ambassador to Ghana, Norma Ang Sánchez, on the Mayor of Accra Michael Kpakpo Allotey, where discussions centred on enhancing city-to-city partnerships, cultural exchanges, and knowledge sharing in urban development.
In her remarks, Ambassador Ang Sánchez underscored the importance of strengthening Africa–Mexico relations through subnational cooperation, noting that collaboration with city authorities remains a key priority for the embassy.
She explained that the embassy’s engagement is guided by two main objectives: deepening institutional relations with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and expanding cooperation between cities in both countries.
The Ambassador further noted that the existing sister-city relationship between Accra and Guadalajara, established about three years ago, has seen limited engagement, stressing that the visit was aimed at revitalising the partnership.
While describing Guadalajara as one of Mexico’s major urban centres and a host city for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, she highlighted similarities between the city and Accra, particularly in terms of urban dynamics and development challenges.
Ambassador Ang Sánchez also proposed broadening cooperation to include other Mexican cities, including Mexico City, noting its large metropolitan population and shared experiences in managing dynamic urban systems.
The renewed engagement reflects growing efforts to strengthen diplomatic and developmental cooperation between Ghana and Mexico, particularly through city-level partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable urban growth.
