Ghana, Sierra Leone commence first Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation

Ghana and Sierra Leone have commenced their first Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) meeting in Accra, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and advancing practical areas of collaboration between the two countries.

The meeting, being held in Accra, provides a platform for structured dialogue, focusing on key sectors such as defence and security, trade and investment, agriculture, energy, and health.
It follows renewed diplomatic momentum generated by President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Freetown in March 2025 and President Julius Maada Bio’s visit to Accra in January 2026.

The commission is designed to move beyond traditional diplomatic engagement toward a results-oriented partnership, with a strong emphasis on leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost trade between the two nations’ private sectors.

Speaking at the session, the Chief Director of Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-Chairperson for the technical session, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, recalled the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Sierra Leone, built on mutual respect and cooperation. She noted that the session marks the operationalization of a mechanism established in 2013 to facilitate structured dialogue between the two countries.

She added that extensive preparations had been made to ensure the meeting delivers actionable outcomes, particularly in trade and development, defence and security, health, energy, and agriculture.
On his part, the Director-General of Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Co-Chairperson, Alan C. E. Logan, described the meeting as a critical step toward translating the shared vision of both leaders into tangible benefits for citizens.

The three-day technical session is expected to culminate in a ministerial meeting on Thursday, April 23, 2026, where several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed to operationalize agreed initiatives.
Mr. Logan reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening economic partnerships and deepening collaboration across key sectors. He also emphasized the importance of leveraging Ghana’s experience, particularly in agriculture.

The meeting reflects the shared commitment of both countries to deepen bilateral relations and promote sustainable development through structured engagement and practical cooperation.
