Ablakwa attends memorial service of late Jason Arday

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has joined Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Zita Sabah Benson, at a memorial service in London in honour of the late British-Ghanaian academic, Prof. Jason Arday.

The service, held at Southwark Cathedral, brought together mourners to remember the former University of Cambridge professor, whose academic journey and achievements had made him an influential figure in discussions about education, representation and social mobility.

Ghana’s participation reflects the government’s commitment to honouring Prof. Arday’s legacy and supporting his bereaved family following his death in August.

In September, President John Dramani Mahama conveyed his condolences to the family through Ghana’s High Commission in the United Kingdom and expressed the country’s intention to be represented at the academic’s funeral.

Ablakwa had earlier paid tribute to Prof. Arday, describing his life and achievements as a source of inspiration, particularly for young people who saw in his journey an example of resilience, determination and the transformative power of education.

“Prof. Arday was a great source of pride and inspiration to Ghanaians in his ancestral home, and many across the world,” Mr Ablakwa wrote in a social media post.

Born in the United Kingdom to Ghanaian parents, Prof. Arday became widely known for overcoming significant challenges in his early life before establishing a career in academia. He was diagnosed with autism as a child and, according to accounts of his life, did not begin speaking until he was 11 and learned to read and write at 18.

He joined the University of Cambridge in 2023 as Professor of Sociology of Education at the age of 37, becoming the youngest Black professor in the institution’s history.

His academic career and personal story attracted international attention, particularly for their significance in discussions about educational access, disability and representation in higher education.

On August 5, 2026, Prof. Arday resigned from his position at Cambridge and as a fellow of Jesus College after the university announced further investigations into his academic qualifications and career. The development followed allegations concerning his academic work, including claims of plagiarism, which he disputed.

In his resignation statement, Prof. Arday said the sustained scrutiny and public commentary had taken a profound toll on him and his family. He maintained that his decision to step down should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing.

He was found dead at his home in Battersea, south London, on August 14, nine days after his resignation. Police initially described his death as unexpected but not suspicious, and a formal inquest was subsequently opened.

His death prompted widespread expressions of grief and renewed debate about academic accountability, media scrutiny and the treatment of public figures facing intense public criticism.

Prof. Arday’s family criticised what they described as a campaign of misinformation and harassment against him, while several public figures and academics called for reflection on the circumstances surrounding the scrutiny he faced.

His legacy continues to feature in conversations about educational opportunity, representation and the responsibilities of institutions and the media when dealing with allegations against individuals.
