Amissah-Arthur Praises Former Botswana President

Amissah-ArthurVice President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur has praised former President of Botswana Festus Gontebanye Mogae for excellent leadership, saying his life should be an example to many in politics today.

He praised the 73 year old former Botswana leader, who was also Vice President for that country from 1992 to 1998.

The former President is in Ghana to deliver the second edition of the African Leadership Lecture Series of the University for Development Studies (UDS), in Tamale.

The former President, who was part of a delegation from the UDS, which paid a courtesy call on the Vice President at the Flagstaff House at Kanda, in Accra.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur extolled the leadership qualities of former President Mogae, saying “he was an example to many of us.”

“The UDS will bask in the glory of a great and reputable leader,” the Vice President said, and promised to attend the last lecture of former President Mogae in Tamale.

The former President said he was pleased to be associated with Ghana and work with Ghanaians.

He said many countries in Africa looked up to Ghana in the 1950s and 1960s, and underlined that the countries of the African Continent have to work collaboratively in finding solutions to common challenges.

Later in an interview with journalists, former President Mogae said his lecture would focus on the effective management of natural resources, explaining that “we could manage our wealth better.”

He said leadership had an important role to play in the effective management of wealth and stressed that the leader must place the development of the youth and their involvement in nation building high on the agenda.

Among the delegation were Dr. Abdulai Baba Salifu, Chairman of the UDS Governing Council and Prof. Haruna Yakubu, Vice Chancellor of the UDS.
