70th UN Anniversary Launched

united_nations_logo360The 70th anniversary celebrations of the United Nations has been launched in Accra by the United Nations Association of Ghana (UNA – Gh).

Ms Janet Edna Nyame, Secretary General of UNA – Gh said the UN’s 70th anniversary theme “Strong UN, better world”, was very relevant in the face of the sprout of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

She said the association had an important role of bridging the gap between the UN and Ghanaians by educating people and creating awareness of the operations of the UN.

To this end, she said the association had been sensitizing people on the post-2015 development goals and commemorating the UN days in educational institutions and other key locations across the country.

Mr Ben Adu Asare, Presidential Staffer said, since joining the UN in 1957, the country has benefit-ted tremendously from the Organization; and that Ghana was a global giant when it comes to providing troops for UN Peacekeeping Operations.

Mavis Kusorgbor, Director of Multi-Lateral Relations Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said Ghana in collaboration with other African countries, since 2005 had been working to ensure that the continent takes its rightful place in the UN Security Council.

Mr Andy Kwabena Asamoah, a retired UN staff and President of the Ghana Association of Former International Civil Servants, said the UN had been largely successful because, aside the maintenance of global peace it sought to provide the health and the socio-economic needs of the people.

He pointed out that sadly, the UN Association of Ghana, established since 1952, had no national office.

He appealed to the UN and the Ghana Government to provide the Association with an office accommodation.
