President John Dramani Mahama departs Accra on Tuesday to participate in an Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government,  to discuss the political situation in Burkina Faso.

The Immediate past Chairman of ECOWAS, is expected to play a  critical role in the Abuja meeting which follows days of mediation efforts led by ECOWAS after a military coup by the Burkinabe Presidential Guards.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency from the Flagstaff House Communication Team, explained that Ghana had in an earlier statement signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Hanna S. Tetteh, condemned the September 17 coup.

The statement noted that coup violated with impunity “the internationally brokered process to promote the principle of entrenching democracy and constitutional governance in Burkina Faso.”
