Ablakwa discuss security and peace promotion with EU Ambassador

The European Union Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, has assured the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, of the EU’s continued support for Ghana’s priority areas, especially efforts to promote peace and security.

The high-level engagement held on 18 February 2026 underscores the European Union’s role as a key partner in Ghana’s democratic and economic development, with specific emphasis on advancing stability, trade, education, and regional security cooperation.

The visit comes at a critical time following the tragic terror attack in Titao, Burkina Faso, which claimed the lives of eight Ghanaian tomato traders and heightened security concerns across the region. With insecurity in the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea posing persistent threats, both Ghana and international partners are seeking stronger cooperation to safeguard citizens and economic activities.

Discussions between Minister Ablakwa and Ambassador Skinnebach centred on reinforcing the Ghana-EU partnership, particularly in areas of peace and security. Minister Ablakwa acknowledged the European Union as one of Ghana’s most significant partners, noting that ongoing strategic engagements have deepened collaboration on trade, education, and security policies that benefit both countries.

Ambassador Skinnebach reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to an impactful and responsive partnership, placing particular emphasis on assisting Ghana to address evolving security challenges. He assured that the European Union would continue providing needed assistance in its priority areas, highlighting that support extends beyond diplomacy into practical security cooperation.

Over the past few years, the EU has funded and delivered key security assistance measures to Ghana. Through the European Peace Facility (EPF), the EU provided non-lethal military equipment, part of a multi-million-euro package, to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly in counter-terrorism and border security operations.

This assistance has included deliveries of vehicles, surveillance systems, and other specialised equipment to boost Ghana’s defence infrastructure.

Beyond equipment, the EU has supported Ghana in broader security efforts such as enhancing maritime and border security and combating organised crime. EU-funded projects have included technical training and workshops for Ghanaian law enforcement, and collaboration on cybersecurity enhancements and transnational crime response, efforts that help fortify both internal stability and regional cooperation frameworks.

In addition, Ghana participates in initiatives like the West African Police Information System (WAPIS), where the EU has partnered with Ghana to strengthen regional security cooperation and information sharing, a key component in preventing cross-border terrorism and organised crime.

The meeting concluded with both the Minister and the Ambassador expressing optimism about the future of EU-Ghana partnership. They pledged to deepen cooperation in peace and security, ensuring that joint efforts in diplomacy, training, capacity building, and logistical support would continue to strengthen Ghana’s resilience against emerging threats and reinforce its role as a stable anchor in West Africa.
