President John Dramani Mahama has admonished the five newly commissioned envoys to embody the true image of Ghana by distinguishing themselves through integrity, professionalism, and excellence in their diplomatic duties abroad.
Addressing the envoys at their commissioning, President Mahama underscored integrity as the cornerstone of effective diplomacy, urging them to uphold high moral standards, transparency, and responsible stewardship as frontline representatives of the state. He stressed that Ghana’s international engagement must deliver not only diplomatic excellence but also measurable economic value and credibility.
“Ghana’s diplomacy must be known not only for excellence, but also value for money, transparency, and responsible stewardship. Beyond policies and targets, diplomacy is ultimately about character. You are the living faces of Ghana” he said
President Mahama placed particular emphasis on the importance of perception and representation abroad, noting that the conduct of Ghana’s envoys must reflect the values deeply cherished by Ghanaians. He said diplomacy remains a key expression of Ghana’s tradition of camaraderie, mutual respect, and genuine bilateral relations with the international community.
“Conduct yourselves with dignity, discipline, and humility. Uphold the highest ethical standards, respect confidentiality, and let your conduct reflect the values we cherish. Those are honesty, respect, fairness, professionalism, and service.” he added.
The President further urged the envoys to engage thoughtfully and strategically in their host countries, encouraging them to listen carefully, negotiate wisely, and represent Ghana with calm confidence. He highlighted the importance of diplomacy rooted in empathy and cultural sensitivity, particularly in engagements with Ghanaian communities abroad.
President Mahama also called for a renewed focus on diaspora engagement, describing the Ghanaian diaspora as a vital national asset whose contributions extend beyond remittances to cultural preservation and national development. He urged the envoys to approach diaspora relations with seriousness and responsibility, noting that strong bonds with Ghanaians abroad remain central to Ghana’s foreign policy priorities.
The diaspora community represents a greater share of Ghana’s forex inflows. The Bank of Ghana cited a dip in remittances from the United Kingdom by 17.5% in 2025. The decline posses worrying concerns, as remittances now surpass foreign direct investment as a major source of foreign exchange inflows and play a critical role in maintaining economic stability.
President Mahama said the selection of the envoys was informed by their proven competence and experience, expressing confidence that their service would yield stronger partnerships, expanded opportunities for Ghanaians, and an enhanced standing for the country within the international community.
