Germany signs €65 million agreement to support technical and financial cooperation in Ghana

Ghana and Germany have signed a protocol, committing over €65 million in technical and financial cooperation aimed at supporting Ghana’s reform agenda and long-term sustainable growth, a move that reinforces decades of partnership.

The agreement was signed by Minister of Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, and, Director for Africa at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Christoph Rauh, marking a key milestone in German-Ghanaian relations.

This year also marks 50 years of development cooperation between the two countries, a partnership defined by trust, dialogue, and a shared vision for what can be achieved together. The signing follows a pledge made by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during his three-day state visit to Ghana, where he met President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House.

Ghana and Germany have taken steps to deepen their partnership, focusing on areas including trade, renewable energy, vocational training, and regional security. A key outcome is an anticipated agreement on labour mobility, which is expected to create structured employment opportunities for young Ghanaian professionals in Germany while addressing skills shortages in critical sectors.

Germany’s support is partly aimed at helping Ghana prepare its growing youth population for the challenges of a digital and energy-transition era. Drawing on its apprenticeship model, Germany plans to assist Ghana in bridging the gap between classroom education and real-world employment.

The second half of 2025 has already seen increased engagement between the two countries, with activities including Ambassador Frederik Landshöft presenting his credentials, celebrating German Unity Day, hosting the University of Freiburg for the Kingfisher Science Lecture, and participating in media and climate action initiatives. These developments underscore ongoing efforts to build stronger bilateral ties and create sustainable pathways for growth and collaboration between Ghana and Germany.
