Relations between Ghana and the United Kingdom received a boost on Wednesday, as both countries have pledged to increase cooperation in the areas of trade, investment and security for the mutual benefit of its people.
This was the outcome of closed door talks when the visiting UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House in Accra on Wednesday.
Speaking to Flagstaff House Correspondents after the closed-door meeting, President Akufo-Addo said their discussions centred on the desire of both countries to deepen the already strong cooperation and relations between them.
He said the consideration of both countries were to seek ways of meeting the challenges and improving the lives of their people.
“A lot is being done to make sure that relations between Ghana and Britain continue to be on an even keel, and that there are areas for greater trade and Business Corporation.
“Both sides are looking at that and what can be done to improve relations and corporation…at the end of the day; it’s about what we can do to improve the lives of our various peoples,” he said.
Mr Johnson on his part congratulated President Akufuo-Addo on his electoral victory, saying he was happy “to see your government going smoothly and getting ready to meet the challenges of the Ghanaian people.”
He said that the UK was optimistic that there would be deeper friendship with Ghana, and that British investors were being encouraged to invest in greater numbers in Ghana’s economy because of the “fantastic atmosphere”.
The UK Foreign Secretary was also confident that the discussions on common interest, including foreign policy and security, would improve the stability of the region which “affects us in Europe as much as anybody else.”
The British Foreign Secretary is on a two-day visit to Ghana.
