The Ghana High Commission UK has issued a warning dismissing as fake a circulating flyer claiming that Ghanaian nationals in the United Kingdom can receive free food from several major retail chains by presenting their Ghana Card.
The commission emphasised that the flyer, which is an AI generated flyer, was not issued by any official government or diplomatic channel and urged the public to ignore its contents.
The retailers named on the fake flyer, Asda, Tesco, Lidl, and Marks & Spencer, are some of the United Kingdom’s most recognised food and grocery outlets, none of which have announced any such initiative linked to the Ghana Card.
Asda, one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains with over 1,100 stores nationwide and a significant share of the grocery market, offers a wide range of products from fresh food to general merchandise. The chain also operates petrol stations and financial services, but has not endorsed or participated in any free‑food programme tied to the Ghana Card.
Tesco is the UK’s biggest supermarket by market share, dominating nearly a third of grocery sales in the country, and is known for its extensive network of stores ranging from large supermarkets to convenience outlets. Like Asda, Tesco has made no announcements about a government‑linked free food initiative.
Lidl, a German discount supermarket, has gained traction in the UK for its low‑priced own‑brand products and was recently named one of the UK’s top supermarkets by consumer groups. Its growing popularity is linked to value and quality in everyday grocery shopping, but it, too, is not involved in the supposed programme advertised in the flyer.
Marks & Spencer, a longstanding British multinational retailer noted for both clothing and premium food offerings, consistently ranks highly in customer satisfaction surveys but has not partnered with any diplomatic mission to offer free food services for cardholders.
Authorities are reminding Ghanaians in the UK to rely on official communications from the Ghana High Commission or trusted news sources for accurate information, especially on matters that affect migrant communities and welfare services.
