Ghana is set to host a High-Level Consultative Conference on Regional Cooperation and Security, convening Heads of State, Ministers, and senior officials from across the region to deliberate on pressing security and governance issues.
The two-day Consultative Conference which will be held from Thursday, 29th to Friday, 30th January 2026 in Accra, will begin with engagements among senior officials and Ministers before culminating in a summit of participating Heads of State and Government. The forum is designed to provide a platform for leaders to exchange views on regional challenges and to foster practical solutions that promote peace, stability, and sustainable development.
The summit also underscores Ghana’s commitment to regional cooperation and sustainable development. By fostering dialogue, practical interventions, and collaborative frameworks, the Consultative Conference is expected to advance a peaceful, secure, and prosperous West Africa.
The security situation in parts of West Africa remains fragile. Terrorism and insurgent movements in countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria continue to cause widespread displacement, disrupt livelihoods, and generate humanitarian crises. Addressing these threats remains a top priority for regional governments and multilateral organizations.
Violent extremism and transnational criminal activities further compound the security challenges. Smuggling, human trafficking, and illicit arms trading have expanded across borders, undermining governance structures and economic development. Regional coordination and joint strategies are essential to mitigate these threats and safeguard citizens.
Also, Maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea has emerged as a critical concern. Piracy, armed robbery at sea, and attacks on shipping and oil infrastructure threaten trade and economic growth. Strengthening regional maritime collaboration is crucial to ensuring safe waters and protecting vital economic interests.
The Consultative Conference aims to review existing initiatives and frameworks for peace, security, and governance. Leaders will discuss practical measures for intelligence sharing, coordinated operations, and enhanced collaboration, with a view to building sustainable mechanisms for regional security.
In addition to security, the summit will examine humanitarian and social implications arising from ongoing conflicts. Discussions will focus on protecting vulnerable populations, improving humanitarian response, and reinforcing governance structures to ensure long-term stability.
Ghana envisions the Consultative Conference as a strategic opportunity to renew regional solidarity and foster collective responsibility. Through this engagement, the government seeks to strengthen resilience, support stability, and promote citizen security across the region.
