Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has pledged the full support of the Ghanaian Mission in Washington, D.C., to ensure that Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is both successful and memorable for Ghanaians at home and abroad.
The Ambassador said the Embassy would work closely with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to address coordination and logistical needs arising from the tournament’s multi-city format, while also leveraging the global event to advance Ghana’s broader national interests.
Ambassador Smith made the remarks when the President of the GFA, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, paid a courtesy call on him in the United States to discuss Ghana’s group placement and preparations ahead of the tournament.
Expressing optimism about Ghana’s prospects, the Ambassador noted that the national team boasts experienced players capable of delivering strong performances on football’s biggest stage and making the nation proud.
For his part, Mr. Simeon-Okraku disclosed that Ghana has been drawn into Pot 4, Group L, alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
He explained that the group arrangement would require, matches to be played across multiple cities, including Boston, Philadelphia, and Toronto, presenting potential logistical challenges for the team and its supporting delegation.
He stressed the importance of close collaboration with the Embassy before and during the tournament, describing the World Cup as a major global platform for projecting Ghana’s image and advancing its interests beyond football.
The GFA President also announced plans to launch new national team jerseys in Washington, D.C., as part of activities surrounding the tournament.
In addition, he said the Association intends to use the World Cup period to establish talent identification camps aimed at discovering and nurturing young Ghanaian football prospects for the future.
Following the meeting, both Ambassador Smith and the GFA President reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration to ensure the successful implementation of the outlined plans and to support Ghana toward a strong and impactful World Cup campaign.
The engagement aligns with broader national efforts involving key institutions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, to maximise the economic, cultural, and diplomatic benefits of Ghana’s participation in the tournament
