Kuwaiti Chargé d’Affaires, Ghana’s Interior Minister discuss stronger security cooperation

The Chargé d’Affaires of the State of Kuwait, Mr. Husain Alebrahim, has paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, at his office in Accra to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in security and related areas.

The visit formed part of ongoing efforts by both countries to deepen their long-standing diplomatic relationship and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Hon. Muntaka expressed gratitude for the engagement and reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to work more closely with Kuwait, noting that no nation can thrive without partnership and mutual support.

He emphasized the long-standing friendship between Ghana and Kuwait and called for continued efforts to preserve and expand the positive ties that have developed over several decades.

The meeting, he said, offered both sides the chance to discuss issues of mutual interest and identify areas for enhanced cooperation.

Mr. Alebrahim highlighted the strong diplomatic foundation between the two countries, recalling that Ghana and Kuwait established relations in 1974.

He noted that the relationship has grown steadily due to the commitment and goodwill of past Amirs and Ghanaian leaders, and he emphasized Kuwait’s desire to further strengthen its engagement with Ghana, particularly in the area of security.

Kuwait has been a significant partner in Ghana’s development efforts. In 2022, the two countries signed a strategic framework document to support the implementation of key initiatives under the COVID-19 Alleviation and Revitalization of Enterprises Support (Ghana CARES) programme.

The Aide Memoire, the first of its kind between Ghana and Kuwait, paved the way for interventions in agriculture, education, health, and entrepreneurship. Through this cooperation, the Kuwait Fund committed 20 million Kuwaiti Dinars, equivalent to approximately 70 million dollars, for projects intended to boost poultry and rice production and create more employment opportunities for the youth.

The agreement also included plans for mechanized irrigation systems, access roads, a greenhouse estate with training facilities, and the construction of three new model Senior High Schools in the Bono, Central, and Western Regions, as well as enhanced laboratories for research and innovation.

Kuwait’s support also extends to wider African development efforts. At the Third Afro-Arab Summit in 2013, the Amir of Kuwait launched a one-billion-dollar Royal Initiative for Africa, from which 700 million dollars has since been disbursed in concessionary loans.

Ghana accessed 24 million dollars from the initiative last year and remains eligible for additional support under the remaining funds.

The courtesy call by the Kuwaiti envoy underscores Ghana’s ongoing commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing national and regional security.
