Mahama engages U.S AFRICOM on security

The commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), Air Force Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson, has held high‑level discussions with President John Dramani Mahama on deepening cooperation to strengthen peace and security in Ghana and the wider West African region.

The engagement took place against the backdrop of escalating violence in parts of the Sahel, including a recent deadly attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso that left eight people dead and several others injured. The incident marked one of the first cross‑border terror incidents involving Ghanaian citizens and underscored the need for enhanced regional security cooperation.

Gen. Anderson’s visit reaffirmed the United States’ long‑standing partnership with Ghana, described in official communiqués as rooted in shared democratic values and mutual commitment to deliver tangible security benefits for both nations.

AFRICOM is one of the U.S. Department of Defense’s seven geographic combatant commands responsible for coordinating military activities across the African continent. The command’s mission includes countering transnational threats, responding to crises, and strengthening African partner forces through training, joint exercises, and security cooperation programs.

Central to AFRICOM’s approach is capacity building alongside African militaries, focusing on professional development, intelligence sharing, and interoperability. This includes joint exercises such as Exercise African Lion, an annual multinational training programme co‑hosted by the U.S. and partner nations like Morocco that brings together troops from across Africa and NATO allies to enhance joint readiness.

In West Africa, AFRICOM works to support regional efforts against extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) by providing advisory support, training, and intelligence assistance rather than leading direct combat operations. These efforts are designed to enhance the capabilities of national forces to independently counter threats and secure their territories.

Recent developments highlight AFRICOM’s active role in supporting regional security partners. A small team of U.S. military officers has recently been deployed to Nigeria to augment counter‑terrorism collaboration following sustained insurgent activity in the country, including air operations against militant targets in coordination with the Nigerian military.

Gen. Anderson emphasised that AFRICOM’s security cooperation programmes are conducted in close coordination with U.S. embassy country teams and partner governments, reinforcing long‑term institutional capacity while respecting national sovereignty.

The discussions with President Mahama also touched on the broader implications of security for economic development. Gen. Anderson has emphasized that stability is a key driver of economic growth, particularly in West African states where trade and cross‑border commerce have been disrupted by insurgency and criminal networks.

The U.S. commitment to bolstering African security complements ongoing diplomatic engagement, including support for regional dialogues and initiatives to enhance governance and resilience against violent extremism. AFRICOM’s mandate includes not only counterterrorism operations but also crisis response, humanitarian assistance, and cooperation that underpins economic and social development across the continent.

As Ghana continues to navigate emerging security challenges along its borders and within the region, the strategic engagement with AFRICOM underscores a shared resolve to address the roots and manifestations of violence through partnership and collective action.
