Minister Advocates Peace As UN Marks 70th Anniversary

united_nations_logo360Alhaji Mohammed Limuna-Muniru, Northern Regional Minister has advocated peace in the country especially in the region as the United Nations (UN) marks its 70th anniversary.

He said the need for peace in the region was very necessary to ensure that developmental projects that have been initiated by the government are implemented to the benefits of the people saying “conflicts has retrogressed development in many parts of the region”.

Alhaji Limuna-Muniru stated this at the weekend in Tamale during the celebration of the anniversary of the UN by its staff and the public on the theme: “Strong UN: better world.”

The celebration started with a procession from the UN offices in the region to the Tamale Sports Stadium with many carrying placards some of which read “Protecting the environment”, “Acting as a global think tank”, Promoting safe drinking water” and “Combating crime”.

He said the UN has contributed significantly to the resolution of many conflicts in a number of countries in the world especially in African countries.

He said without the UN, peace would not have been achieved in Somalia, Congo, Liberia, Sudan and other conflict zones in Africa.

“It is also important to draw our attention to the growing menace of extremism which is threatening global peace….Let us not allow the extremists to dominate us,” the minister said.

Mr Ban Kin Mon in a speech read on his behalf assured the world of its resolve to promote peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.

He said with collective discussions, the world could overcome all the difficulties and seize the opportunity to promote rapid development in a live of prosperity, security and dignity for all humans.
