Tourism Minister attends UN Executive Council Meeting

tourism-ministerMrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, is attending the 103rd session of the United Nation World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) Executive Council meeting.

The meeting, which is being held in Malaga, Spain, started on Monday, May 9.

It would end on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

A statement from the Ministry, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said Ghana was last year elected to serve on the Executive Council of the World Tourism body at the 21st session of its General Assembly held in Medellin, Colombia.

It said Ghana’s election was in recognition of its efficient hosting of the Brand Africa conference the same year and its defining roles in the spheres of the UNTWO.

The Executive Council is UNWTO’s governing board, responsible for ensuring that the Organisation carries out its work and adheres to its budget.

It meets, at least, twice a year and is composed of members elected by the General Assembly in a ratio of one for every five full members.

The statement said while in Spain, Mrs Ofosu-Adjare would confer with counterpart Executive Council members to set global tourism agenda, which would determine the growth direction for the sector.

She is also expected to have sideline engagements with other tourism stakeholders including the STEP Foundation.

The Minister’s delegation includes Ghana’s Ambassador to Spain Mrs Elizabeth Adjei and Mr Francis Abekah, Minister (Political and Economic) Deputy Head of Mission.

The Executive Council members currently include the following countries – Angola, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bulgaria, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador and Egypt.

The rest are France, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Peru, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Seychelles, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Tunisia and Zambia.
