UNDP signs agreement to commence Phase II of PRVEA

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ghana has signed a new agreement to launch Phase II of the Atlantic Corridor Project, aimed at tackling violent extremism in Ghana and its neighboring countries.

The agreement, which covers Ghana, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Togo, seeks to strengthen community resilience and engagement to prevent the surge of violent extremism across the sub-region.

Under this initiative, Preventing and Responding to Violent Extremism in the Atlantic Corridor is co-funded by Denmark, Norway, Australia, and Germany. The program focuses on addressing the immediate drivers of radicalization that can escalate into violent extremism.

In Ghana, the project has provided livelihood and farming support to women in Nsunia, located in the Bole District of the Savannah Region.

The community is primarily engaged in cassava farming, fishing, and Shea nut collection—activities that serve as vital sources of income for local families.
Nsunia, however, faces significant development challenges.

The community lacks basic social amenities such as schools and health facilities, with most residents relying on the neighboring community of Mandari for healthcare. Infrastructure is also inadequate, including poor road networks and unstable electricity, which limit access to essential services and economic opportunities.

Through the Atlantic Corridor Project, UNDP has supported women and youth in Nsunia by providing ten energy-saving stoves, five Shea nut drying platforms, and two diesel-powered cassava graters. These interventions are designed to enhance livelihoods while addressing the immediate drivers of violent extremism in the community.
