US Secretary Of Commerce Departs Ghana

The US Secretary of Commerce, Mrs. Penny Pritzker, on May 21st, 2014 left the shores of Ghana after embarking on a three-day visit to the country.

Ms. Pritzker, who was accompanied by a delegation of 20 American firms, sought to promote U.S. exports and expand U.S. presence in Africa by encouraging American companies to tap into the vast potential of the continent’s energy sector.

In her short stay in Ghana, Ms. Pritzker together with her entourage, which included PAGE Ambassador Nina Vacca, engaged President John Mahama at the Flagstaff House to discuss new prospects of the economic ties between both countries, while underscoring US’s commitment towards supporting Ghana to rectify the fiscal challenges confronting its economy.

“We want to work closely with your government to grow the local economy because the partnership between our countries is extremely important whether fiscal matters or energy issues,” Ms. Pritzker said at the meeting.

The Secretary of Commerce, also interacted with the Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Haruna Idrissu, as well as entrepreneurs and journalists at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), an institution which provides training, investment and mentoring for aspiring technology entrepreneurs.

Ms. Penny Pritzker ended her visit to Ghana with a tour of a sub-station of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG); and the signing of two MOUs on energy worth $500 million with Ghana’s Energy Minister Emmanuel Buah.

The US Secretary of Commerce is scheduled for Nigeria, as she continues her 5-day Energy-Business Development tour in the sub-region.
