The Internal Steering Committee (ISC) of the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework (ECPF) says it is satisfied with the growing collective ownership of the framework by all stakeholders.
“It is a veritable tool of bringing about greater stability in the region,” the Committee said.
Dr Aeremi Ajibewa, the ECOWAS Director of Political Affairs, expressed the satisfaction of the regional body at a meeting of the ISC with development partners and staff of strategic directorates of ECOWAS engaged in the ECPF process in Abuja, Nigeria on Tuesday.
The meeting was called to brief participants on the outcome of earlier meetings with development partners, lessons from results-based management training as well as an internal launch of the newly developed ECPF Web Portal.
Dr Ajibewa said stakeholders of the ECPF had made strides over the past months and had reached a point where they now owned the process rather than the narrow perception that it was just a programme of the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security of ECOWAS.
He expressed the hope that some of the issues and new threats bordering on illegal nomadic migration and violent extremism have been identified to be tackled by the ECPF.
Apart from working out ways of engaging the media on good governance and anti-corruption among other things, stakeholders were also enjoined to brace themselves to deal with the issues that bring about delays in the implementation of the ECPF.
The ECPF Secretariat introduced directorates to the mapping tools to be used to assess contributions being made by stakeholders and partners.
At the meeting there was a presentation by the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit on capacity building for ECOWAS Commission staff.
During the meeting, the ECPF web portal – www.ecpf.ecowas.int was launched. The web portal was developed in keeping with the desire to make the conflict prevention and peace building activities of ECOWAS more visible to citizens of the sub-region.
It is also meant to be an information sharing tool and reservoir of matters dealing with peace, security and conflict resolution.
