Ghana joins world to commemorate World Water Day

Ghana today joins the world to celebrate the United Nation’s (UN) World Water Day (WWD) to reflect on the importance of fresh water and advocate for sustainable management of fresh water resources.

The World Water Day is celebrated globally on March 22 every year by all member states of the UN.

In a statement signed by Mr Joseph Obeng-Poku, the Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the day, which is on theme: “Water and Waste Water” is to provide an opportunity for the international community to highlight the relationship between water and waste water in the quest for sustainable development.

“Activities lined up for the celebration of the day include a flag-raising ceremony and stakeholder engagement to deliberate on the theme ‘Waste Water Treatment and the re-use in Ghana: prospects for sustainable development,” the statement said.

The Ministry expressed concern about the poor environmental sanitation and the abuse of water bodies, which it described had become major threats to the livelihoods of the affected communities in particular and national security in general.

The Ministry appealed to Ghanaians to preserve the water bodies and develop positive attitudes towards the environment in connection with to day-to-day sanitation practices to promote good health and national development.
