Address Electoral Disputes Through Legal Channels – US Ambassador To Ghana

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie Sullivan has applauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his re-election in the December 7 polls.

Describing the elections as “free, fair and peaceful”, Mrs Sullivan urged parties to resolve electoral disputes through established legal channels.

“The United States expects that any electoral disputes would be resolved through established legal channels, in keeping with Ghana’s hard-earned reputation as a shining example of democracy in the region and across the world,” she said in a statement on Thursday.

The Electoral Commission on Wednesday evening declared President Akufo-Addo as president-elect in a keenly contested election.

He won the poll with 6,730,413 votes which represent 51.595 per cent of the total valid votes cast – 515,524 votes more than his closest competitor, John Dramani Mahama from the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who got 47.366 per cent of the valid votes cast.

The NDC has however disputed the figures of the Electoral Commission, claiming election irregularities.

U.S. Ambassador to Ghana Stephanie S. Sullivan applauds Ghana on its successful elections on December 7, 2020 and congratulates President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his re-election.  The elections were conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner, while protecting the wellbeing of Ghanaians during the COVID-19 global pandemic. The United States expects that any electoral disputes would be resolved through established legal channels, in keeping with Ghana’s hard-earned reputation as a shining example of democracy in the region and across the world.

The U.S. government stands ready to continue our strong partnership with the government and people of Ghana to advance our shared prosperity.
