Many countries around the world are fighting to end the menace of plastic pollution in the ocean. The story of plastic pollution in Ghana is not different from others as the country still struggles to save and protect the ocean and the environment from this menace to increase ecotourism.
For this reason, the European Union (EU) Delegation to Ghana, and Plastic Punch, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protecton of the coastal environment from plastic waste embarked on a beach cleanup exercise last weekend dubbed: “#EUBeachCleanup” to help raise awareness on plastic ocean pollution in Ghana.
The cleanup exercise which took place at Laboma Beach Resort brought together, government officials, non-governmental organizations, youth groups including the Young Diplomats of Ghana (YDG), volunteers, and some popular musicians including Sarkodie and his Sarkcess team.
The new head of the EU Delegation to Ghana, H.E. Irchad Razaaly in an interview with Diplomatic Times indicated that the EU’s global priority is to ensure that the world uses less plastic, recycle more plastic, and re-use more plastic in order to avoid ocean and sea pollution.
In his words, “we are conducting this today in Ghana, but this is conducted globally the same day in order to raise awareness. We won’t make a difference today but we will make a difference in making sure that, the youth in this country and Europe as well, use less plastic, re-uses plastic and recycle more plastic”.
The EU Beach Cleanup is annual event which takes place every year globally to educate the public about coastal pollution.
