Rubio labels 66 IGOs as harmful to U.S interest, backs withdrawal

The United States has officially announced its withdrawal from 66 international organizations, following a review initiated under Executive Order 14199. The move, outlined in a statement by Senator Marco Rubio, reflects the Trump Administration’s assessment that the organizations were redundant, mismanaged, and harmful to U.S. national interests.

According to the statement, these institutions were found to be wasteful, poorly run, or captured by actors advancing agendas inconsistent with U.S. sovereignty and prosperity. “It is no longer acceptable to be sending these institutions the blood, sweat, and treasure of the American people, with little to nothing to show for it,” the statement said. The withdrawal underscores a broader effort by the administration to prioritize resources and diplomatic engagement where it directly serves the American people.

Observers note that this move is consistent with President Trump’s longstanding skepticism toward multilateral institutions, including the United Nations, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other IGOs. Since his first term, Trump has repeatedly criticized international bodies for being inefficient, overly bureaucratic, or biased against American interests, often threatening to cut funding, withdraw membership, or renegotiate U.S. obligations. His approach reflects a broader “America First” philosophy, prioritizing national sovereignty, fiscal prudence, and bilateral over multilateral engagement.

The statement characterizes the evolution of international institutions as shifting from pragmatic frameworks for global cooperation to global governance structures dominated by ideological agendas, including campaigns on diversity, gender equity, and climate orthodoxy. The administration warned that such organizations may constrain American sovereignty and operate contrary to national priorities.

“As this list begins to demonstrate, what started as a pragmatic framework of international organizations for peace and cooperation has morphed into a sprawling architecture of global governance, often dominated by progressive ideology and detached from national interests. From DEI mandates to “gender equity” campaigns to climate orthodoxy, many international organizations now serve a globalist project rooted in the discredited fantasy of the “End of History.” These organizations actively seek to constrain American sovereignty. Their work is advanced by the same elite networks—the multilateral “NGO-plex”— that we have begun dismantling through the closure of USAID.” the statement read

Senator Rubio emphasized that while the U.S. remains open to cooperation with international partners, participation will be measured against practical benefits and alignment with national interests. He noted that the administration will continue to review other international organizations under Executive Order 14199 to ensure effective and accountable engagement.
