Parliamentary committee engages Israeli Ambassador for investigation into UNIFIL missile attacks

The Parliamentary Committees on Foreign Affairs and Defence and Intelligence have called for a full, independent and transparent investigation into the missile strikes that injured two Ghanaian soldiers serving as peacekeepers with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The call was made during an engagement with Israel’s Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, where lawmakers urged that the individuals or entities responsible for the attack be identified and held accountable, stressing that the strike raises serious concerns about the safety of United Nations peacekeeping personnel.

Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, said the Minority in Parliament considers the incident a serious violation of international law and has therefore demanded a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.

“The Minority therefore calls for a full and comprehensive investigation into the incident to establish the facts and ensure that those responsible are identified and held accountable. It is equally important that stronger security arrangements are put in place around peacekeeping operations in Lebanon to guarantee the safety of all peacekeepers,” he said.

The source of the missile strikes has not yet been officially confirmed. The incident occurred amid escalating tensions in southern Lebanon following intensified hostilities between the Israel Defense Forces and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The developments come as military exchanges across the region have heightened security risks for peacekeeping personnel stationed along the volatile Israel–Lebanon border, where UNIFIL operates.

Mr. Jinapor emphasized that Ghanaian troops deployed under the UN mandate are not participants in the conflict but neutral peacekeepers tasked with maintaining stability and supporting humanitarian protection efforts in the region.

He noted that Ghanaian soldiers serving in UN missions have over the years earned global respect for their professionalism, discipline and commitment to international peacekeeping.

“Ghanaian soldiers deployed under the mandate of the United Nations have, over the years, earned global respect for their discipline and unwavering commitment to the cause of peace. These men and women serve in difficult and often dangerous environments, not as combatants in ongoing conflicts but as peacekeepers tasked with helping to maintain stability and protect civilian populations,” he said in a post on X.

He added that Ghana must continue to stand firmly behind its troops serving abroad, stressing that their safety and welfare must remain a national priority.

Mr. Jinapor noted that Ghanaian peacekeepers often serve in challenging environments far from home and that the country has a duty to ensure that their safety, dignity and wellbeing remain protected wherever they are deployed.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally lodged a protest with the United Nations following the March 6 attack, for a full, immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding it
