The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has commended the Government of Saudi Arabia for granting exceptional approval for the remains of Ghana’s late Deputy Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Sanni Jajah, to be buried at the Al-Baqi Cemetery in Medina.
Ablakwa described the late diplomat as a man of kindness, integrity, dedication and selfless service to Ghana, praying that his memory would remain a blessing and that Allah would grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
Jajah’s funeral was held in Mamobi in Accra, where President John Dramani Mahama and the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, joined members of the Muslim and Ghanaian communities to pay tribute to the late diplomat.
The Foreign Affairs Minister expressed gratitude to the Saudi Government for the special dispensation that allowed Jajah to be laid to rest at Al-Baqi, one of the most historically significant burial grounds in Islam.
“We thank the Government of Saudi Arabia for their special dispensation in allowing Alhaji Sanni Jajah to be buried at the famous and sacred Al-Baqi Cemetery in Medina. May his memory be a blessing and may Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” he stated.
Located adjacent to the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, Al-Baqi has served as a principal cemetery for the city since the time of Prophet Muhammad. It is the resting place of several of the Prophet’s companions, members of his family and his wives, including the Mothers of the Believers. Saudi Arabia’s official heritage platform, Saudipedia, identifies it as the largest and oldest cemetery in Medina.
Jajah was appointed Deputy Head of Mission at Ghana’s Embassy in Saudi Arabia by President Mahama in September 2025. He worked alongside Ghana’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alhaji Said Sinare, and was involved in diplomatic and consular responsibilities, including support for Ghanaian nationals and pilgrims travelling to the Kingdom for Hajj.
Following his death, Ambassador Sinare described Jajah as a trusted colleague and confidant who served Ghana with loyalty and dedication. He also commended his professionalism, humility, integrity and commitment to Ghana’s diplomatic representation in Saudi Arabia.
In expressing appreciation to the Saudi Government, Ablakwa also extended his condolences to Jajah’s family and the many people whose lives he touched during his public service.
“President John Mahama, His Eminence the National Chief Imam, Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu and I paid glowing tribute to a man of extraordinary kindness, integrity, dedication, patriotism and selfless devotion in the service of Ghana….Our prayers and thoughts continue to be with his family and the many loved ones he touched.” he stated
