Ghana Boxing Federation engages Swiss Ambassador to explore cooperation opportunities

The Ghana Boxing Federation has engaged the Ambassador of Switzerland to Ghana, Simone Giger, to forge a sports-based partnership aimed at expanding opportunities for amateur boxing and strengthening Ghana’s international competitiveness.

The Federation’s delegation, led by its President, Dauda Fuseini, paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Giger to commend her for her support following her ringside appearance during the2 026 National Amateur Boxing Championships in January, which was held to reconstitute Ghana’s national amateur boxing team.

The delegation included newly selected amateur boxers expected to lead Black Bombers in their quest for gold at the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2026 and the Olympic Games 2028.

During the engagement, the Boxing Federation explored opportunities for technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, training attachments, coaching development, referee training, exchange bouts, and potential funding support to strengthen logistics and infrastructure for amateur boxing in Ghana.

Mr. Fuseini emphasized that boxing remains one of Ghana’s most successful sports, producing globally recognized champions despite limited investment. He noted that structured partnerships with diplomatic missions and corporate institutions could unlock the sport’s full potential. He also referenced support from the Embassy of France in Ghana in October 2025, which assisted the Federation with equipment procurement to support amateur tournaments.

“We are hopeful that other embassies will emulate this support to help develop boxing in Ghana. It is one of the country’s most dominant sports, and with the needed support, we can go far. We want to build a strong relationship between Ghana and Switzerland, possibly through bilateral exchanges where both countries learn from each other,” Mr. Fuseini said.

Ambassador Giger welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to supporting youth development and sports diplomacy. She requested a formal concept note from the Federation outlining areas of collaboration and potential programmes to deepen cooperation.

The visit also highlights growing bilateral engagement between Ghana and Switzerland, particularly in youth empowerment, skills development, and community advancement. Switzerland has historically supported development initiatives in Ghana through technical cooperation, vocational training, and private sector development programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and economic opportunities.

Through organizations such as the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Switzerland has supported projects in Ghana focused on sustainable economic development, skills training for young people, and strengthening local governance systems. These initiatives have contributed to job creation and improved community resilience, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Additionally, Swiss-backed initiatives in Ghana have supported entrepreneurship, climate-resilient agriculture, and vocational education, helping young Ghanaians access opportunities in emerging sectors. The proposed boxing collaboration is therefore seen as an extension of Switzerland’s broader commitment to youth empowerment and community development through strategic partnerships.

The engagement also comes at a crucial time for the Black Bombers, as several top fighters from the African Games 2023 have transitioned to the professional ranks. Notable names including Abu Kamoko, Jonathan Tetteh, Samuel Takyi, and others have moved up, prompting the Federation to rebuild a new generation of amateur talent.
