Ghana and the U.S. deepen maritime security cooperation.

Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defence ties with the United States, with a renewed focus on enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

The engagement took place at the Ministry of Defence in Accra, where a high-level United States delegation, led by the U.S. Chief of Navy for Europe and Africa, Admiral George Wikoff, and the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy Ghana, Rolf Olson, was received on behalf of the acting minister of defence, Cassiel Ato Forson.

Ghana and the United States share a longstanding defence partnership rooted in cooperation across military training, peacekeeping and maritime security. This relationship has increasingly evolved to address emerging threats within the Gulf of Guinea, including piracy, trafficking and other transnational crimes.

This builds on broader U.S.–Ghana maritime cooperation efforts, including recent engagements between the Ghana Maritime Authority and the U.S. Coast Guard aimed at strengthening port security systems and ensuring compliance with international maritime standards, particularly at the Tema and Takoradi ports.

The latest discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in maritime security, capacity building and joint operations, reflecting the shared interest of both countries in maintaining stability across West Africa’s coastal waters and safeguarding critical sea routes.

Ghana also expressed appreciation to the United States for its continued support in key areas of defence cooperation, including technical assistance in investigating the recent helicopter crash and logistical support for the air transportation of Ghanaian troops to Jamaica for Operation Boafo.

The engagement underscores the deepening strategic ties between Ghana and the United States, built on mutual interests in security, stability and international cooperation.
