India offers 55 scholarship slots to Ghanaians under AYUSH Programme

The Indian High Commission in Ghana has opened applications for 55 Ghanaians to pursue higher education in India under the AYUSH Scholarship Scheme for the 2026–27 academic year.

The scholarship, supported by the Government of India through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Ministry of AYUSH, covers programmes in traditional and holistic medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy


The scholarship offers several benefits to successful applicants, including a monthly stipend based on the course level, accommodation support in line with ICCR norms, full tuition fee coverage, and return economy-class airfare at the beginning and completion of the programme.

Applications must be submitted online only through the A2A Scholarship Portal. Applicants are required to carefully upload all necessary documents, including academic transcripts and passport-size photographs. The deadline for submission is 15 May 2026.

At the undergraduate level, applicants must have completed 12 years of schooling with Science subjects, specifically Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Eligible programmes include the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), and Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS).

These are 5½-year degree programmes, which include one year of mandatory clinical training (internship). In addition, applicants with 12 years of schooling can also apply for the Bachelor of Science in Yoga (3-year course) and Bachelor of Arts in Yoga Shastra (3-year course).

For postgraduate studies, applicants must hold relevant undergraduate degrees recognised by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) or the Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH). This includes MD in Ayurveda for BAMS holders, MD in Siddha for BSMS graduates, MD in Unani for BUMS graduates, and MD in Homeopathy for BHMS graduates, each lasting three years. A Master of Science in Yoga is also available as a two-year programme for applicants with any recognised bachelor’s degree.

At the doctoral level, the scheme offers PhD opportunities in Ayurveda, Unani, and Yoga. Eligibility requires an MD in Ayurveda for PhD in Ayurveda, an MD in Unani for PhD in Unani, while a postgraduate degree qualifies applicants for PhD in Yoga, which may take up to five years depending on research requirements.

India is home to some of the world’s leading institutions in traditional medicine and yoga studies. Universities such as the Banaras Hindu University, the National Institute of Ayurveda, and the All India Institute of Ayurveda are globally recognised for their expertise in AYUSH education, clinical training, and research. These institutions continue to attract students from across Africa and beyond, reinforcing India’s position as a global centre for traditional medicine.

The AYUSH Scholarship Scheme reflects India’s growing educational and cultural cooperation with Ghana, strengthening bilateral ties through academic exchange. By offering Ghanaian students access to specialised training in holistic healthcare systems, India continues to contribute to human resource development, health education, and cross-cultural learning between the two countries.
