Google for Education signs MoU with Ghana to integrate AI in education

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Google for Education to mainstream Artificial Intelligence (AI) within Ghana’s education system.

The agreement, signed on the sidelines of the Education World Forum, is aimed at supporting Ghana’s efforts to innovate teaching and learning, strengthen digital literacy, enhance teacher capacity, and equip students with employable skills aligned with a rapidly evolving global job market.

The MoU was signed between the Government of Ghana and Google for Education, represented by its Global Managing Director, Kelvin Kells, as part of the tech giant’s broader mid-term investment strategy in Africa’s digital transformation.

In a Facebook post announcing the development, the Minister said the partnership reflects a strategic collaboration to integrate advanced AI technologies into Ghana’s education system to improve both teaching delivery and learning outcomes.

He noted that the initiative is expected to modernise classroom instruction, support curriculum delivery, and prepare students for technology-driven industries increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital innovation.

“Yesterday, l signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Education Ghana and  Google for Education, represented by Mr. Kelvin Kells, Global Managing Director. The agreement seeks to affirm a strategic collaboration aimed at integrating advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies into Ghana’s education system.” He said.

Earlier in January, the Minister indicated that Google is already working with the University of Ghana and the GDI Hub to develop speech recognition and AI tools tailored to Ghanaian languages, including Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani.

That initiative is designed to improve learning outcomes by expanding access to digital tools in local languages and reducing barriers faced by students who communicate in non-standardised speech patterns often excluded from global AI systems.

Education experts say the language-focused AI project could significantly improve accessibility in classrooms and enhance inclusion in public digital services, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

The partnership also aligns with Google’s wider investment strategy in Africa’s digital economy. In July 2025, the company announced a US$37 million investment in AI research and digital skills development across the continent, including the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Community Centre in Accra.

The initiative forms part of Google’s broader US$1 billion commitment to Africa’s digital transformation agenda, positioning Ghana as a key hub for AI research, innovation, and skills development in West Africa.

Officials say the collaboration marks a significant step in Ghana’s long-term education reform agenda, with a strong focus on future-ready skills, digital inclusion, and technology-driven learning systems.
