Tipu Usman pays courtesy call on Commonwealth S-G

The newly appointed High Commissioner of Pakistan to the United Kingdom, Tipu Usman, has paid a courtesy call on the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, to reaffirm the longstanding partnership between Pakistan and the Commonwealth.

The discussions reflected a shared commitment to addressing global challenges while expanding opportunities for economic growth and youth development across the Commonwealth.

A key focus of the meeting was strengthening collaboration on climate resilience, an increasingly urgent priority for Commonwealth nations. Both sides acknowledged the importance of working together to develop sustainable solutions that enable communities to adapt to the impacts of climate change while promoting environmental sustainability.

The conversation also highlighted Pakistan’s role in advancing youth opportunities within the Commonwealth. Recognising the country’s efforts in empowering young people through education, skills development, and leadership initiatives, appreciation was expressed for Pakistan’s continued commitment to placing youth at the centre of the Commonwealth agenda.

Investing in young people remains essential to building resilient societies and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.

Looking ahead, both sides discussed the growing momentum towards the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The upcoming summit will provide an opportunity for member states to strengthen cooperation, uphold shared values, and develop practical solutions to common challenges. Building a more prosperous, resilient, and inclusive Commonwealth will require sustained collaboration among all member states.

tipu Usman is a senior career diplomat of Pakistan’s Foreign Service with extensive experience in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. Before his appointment as Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, he served as Chief of State Protocol at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he played a key role in managing diplomatic engagements and official interactions involving foreign dignitaries and government officials.

Over the course of his diplomatic career, Usman has held several important assignments, including serving as Deputy Head of Mission at the Pakistan Embassy in Riyadh, Counsellor at Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, First Secretary at the Pakistan Embassy in Ankara, and Vice Consul at the Pakistan Consulate in Vancouver, Canada. These postings have given him broad exposure to political, economic, and multilateral diplomacy.

The meeting concluded with warm wishes to Tipu Usman as he begins his tenure as Pakistan’s High Commissioner. His appointment is expected to further strengthen diplomatic relations and deepen cooperation between Pakistan and the Commonwealth in areas of mutual interest.
