The Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson, has engaged the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, on measures to facilitate visa processing and other travel arrangements for Ghanaian athletes and officials ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The engagement forms part of Ghana’s early preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, scheduled for July 14 to 30, with discussions focusing on ensuring that visa and logistical arrangements are addressed well ahead of the Games.
Mr Olson indicated that the U.S. Embassy was prepared to deploy additional consular capacity to facilitate visa applications for Ghanaian athletes and officials, with the aim of supporting timely processing and Ghana’s full representation at the Games.
The discussions also covered athlete and official development, qualification pathways and early coordination on travel and logistical arrangements. Both sides further discussed opportunities to strengthen sports cooperation between Ghana and the United States, including areas that could support athlete development and the broader growth of sport in Ghana.
The engagement comes shortly after Ghana’s participation in the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where Ghanaian sprinter Godfred Opoku reached the men’s 400-metre final and finished fourth in 45.46 seconds. His compatriot Aishatu Jaffar competed in the women’s 400 metres but was disqualified in the opening round.
The recent competition provides a further context for early coordination between Ghanaian sports authorities and U.S. officials as the country prepares to send athletes and officials to another major international sporting event on U.S. soil.
Mr Adams, meanwhile, briefed the U.S. diplomat on President John Dramani Mahama’s plans to strengthen grassroots and school-level football development as part of efforts to improve talent identification, physical well-being and the development of essential life skills among young people.
The initiative is also aimed at addressing gaps in the transition of young talents into elite-level football while strengthening Ghana’s competitiveness and profile in continental and international football.
The Los Angeles 2028 Games will mark the third time the United States city hosts the Olympic Games, following the 1932 and 1984 editions.
