Ghana’s Amputee team receives Mexican Embassy’s well wishes ahead of World Cup

Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, and their Liberian counterparts have paid a courtesy visit to the Mexican Embassy in Ghana ahead of the 2026 World Amputee Football World Cup, scheduled to take place in Mexico next month.

The embassy welcomed the teams and expressed pride in Mexico hosting the tournament, describing it as an opportunity to promote inclusion by creating space for persons with disabilities to compete in sport.

“We are proud to host this tournament in Mexico as part of an exciting, football-filled 2026. We wish both teams the very best of luck,” the embassy wrote in a message ahead of the competition.

The tournament, organised by the World Amputee Football Federation (WAFF), will take place in San Juan de los Lagos from November 13 to 22, bringing together 24 national teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas to compete for the world title.

Ghana will enter the competition seeking to translate its continental success into a global title. The Black Challenge won the African Amputee Football Championship in Tanzania in 2021, defeating Liberia 3–2 in the final, before claiming gold at the inaugural African Para Games in Accra in 2023 with a 2–1 victory over Morocco.

The team retained its African championship title in Cairo in 2024, beating Morocco by the same scoreline to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Ghana have been drawn in Group D alongside Angola, Colombia and Iraq. Angola, in particular, will pose a notable challenge, having won the 2018 World Cup and reached the final again in 2022.

The 2026 tournament also presents Ghana with an opportunity to make a fresh start on the global stage. Ghana and Liberia were among the teams that qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Mexico but did not arrive for the competition. The World Amputee Football Federation listed both countries among the expected participants who failed to attend.

With Ghana and Liberia both set to compete in this year’s edition, the visit to the Mexican Embassy offers an opportunity to strengthen goodwill ahead of the tournament, while drawing attention to amputee football and the role of sport in promoting participation and inclusion for persons with disabilities.
