Russians Celebrates World War II Victory

Russia-FlagRussians in Accra and their allies converged at the residence of the Russian Ambassador to celebrate the victory of World War II, which started in 1941 and ended in 1945.

The celebration was attended by Ministers of states and members of the diplomatic corps, including the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Gene Cretz.

Dmitry Suslov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in Ghana with concurrent accreditation in the republic of Liberia, said the celebration of the victory was holy for all Russians and other people of the Soviet Union who know and remember what fascism is and what fascists could do if they were not stopped.

“Russians know what war against fascism is and it took more than 50 years to count down our losses in World War II. For us, it was first of all, the Great Patriotic War against fascism as an ideology and Nazi States and its satellites. They came to our territory to take it and to kill us and in May 2, 1945, we took Berlin and freed Europe from fascism,” he said.

He said even though the day is meant to be celebrated, it is always done with tears, as millions of its compatriots including women, civilians, children and elders were killed simply because they were Russians, adding that, the price for the victory was too high.

Ambassador Suslov used the occasion to salute its allies in the anti Hitler coalition, leaders and the people of Great Britain, United States, France and China and soldiers of the anti-fascism resistance.
