Association Pushes For Domestication of UN Convention

UNThe Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD), is organizing series of stakeholder meetings, aimed at pressuring government to speed up the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability (UNCRPD).

Since the ratification of the UNCRPD in August 2012, the Federation said Ghana was yet to initiate actions for the implementation of provisions in the Convention, to ensure it conformed to local laws.

Mrs Rita Kyeremaa Kusi, Executive Director of GFD, said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday that stakeholders would gather on Friday to share ideas for the development of strategies for effective implementation of the UN Convention, and to impress upon the government to speed up efforts at domesticating it.

“As Civil Society Organizations, our role is to impress upon government to expedite action on the process of implementation through the development of an implementation plan, domestication of the Convention and implementation of the provisions therein,” she said.

“It is also critical to have efficient monitoring indicators to monitor the progress as well as the fulfillment of the obligations of the State as set out in the UNCRPD,” she added.

She said implementation of the Act would give full legal backing to the rights of persons with disability to enjoy their human rights and inclusiveness in the Ghanaian society.

The forum is facilitated by the Federation in partnership with Mind freedom and Law and Development Associates, non-governmental organisations, with funding from the Open Society Initiative for West Africa.
