Ablakwa engages APRM, Civil Service, retired diplomats, pledges to rely on counsel

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has engaged the Governing Council of the National African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), who have commended him for his continued work in advancing Ghana’s interests on the global stage.

The Minister also received separate delegations from the Governing Council of the Ghana Civil Service, led by its Chair, Dr. Lawrence A. Kannae, as well as the Association of Retired Ambassadors, led by former Chief of Defence Staff and diplomat, Peter Blay. The APRM delegation was led by its Chair, Akua Kuenyehia.

Mr. Ablakwa described the engagements as productive, noting that the visiting delegations offered words of commendation and encouragement regarding his stewardship at the Ministry. He expressed appreciation for their support and pledged to rely on their experience and counsel in advancing Ghana’s foreign policy agenda.

“I am deeply grateful to these eminent Ghanaians for their words of commendation for my work as Foreign Minister and their kind encouragement. I shall continue to count on their guidance and wise counsel,” he stated.

The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is a voluntary self-monitoring instrument of the African Union designed to promote good governance, accountability, and sustainable development among member states. Ghana has been one of the most active participants in the mechanism, often cited for its commitment to peer review processes and governance reforms.

Professor Akua Kuenyehia, who chairs the APRM Governing Council, is a distinguished legal scholar and former judge of the International Criminal Court, where she served as First Vice-President. She is widely recognised for her contributions to international law, gender justice, and institutional development both in Ghana and globally.

Dr. Lawrence A. Kannae, Chair of the Ghana Civil Service Governing Council, is known for his role in strengthening public sector administration and governance systems. The Ghana Civil Service plays a critical role in policy implementation and institutional continuity, making its leadership central to national development and administrative efficiency.

Lieutenant General Peter Blay, who led the delegation of retired ambassadors, is a former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces and has also served in diplomatic capacities. His experience bridges both security and foreign policy, reflecting the growing intersection between defence strategy and diplomacy in Ghana’s international engagements.

The series of engagements reflects a broader effort by the Foreign Affairs Ministry to deepen collaboration with experienced national institutions and thought leaders. It also underscores the importance of institutional memory and expert guidance in shaping Ghana’s diplomatic direction.
