Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Sadiq, has called for Ghana and Barbados to translate their shared history and longstanding diplomatic ties into practical partnerships that advance national development, expand economic opportunities and improve the welfare of their people.
He made the call following an engagement with Barbados High Commissioner to Ghana with concurrent accreditation to Nigeria, Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new areas of cooperation between Accra and Bridgetown.
Ghana and Barbados established diplomatic relations in 1994, while their relationship has continued to expand beyond historical and cultural ties into areas including aviation, tourism, labour mobility and economic cooperation.
“Our task now is to translate that shared heritage into practical partnerships that connect our people, unlock opportunities and strengthen Africa–Caribbean relations,” Mr Sadiq said.
The renewed engagement comes at a time of growing Ghana-Barbados cooperation, particularly following the participation of Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in the Next Steps High-Level Consultative Conference on Reparatory Justice in Accra in June 2026.
The conference brought together representatives from more than 80 countries and reaffirmed a shared agenda on historical justice, restitution and stronger cooperation between Africa, the Caribbean and the global African diaspora.
Reparatory justice has become an important component of the two countries’ diplomatic engagement, reflecting their shared historical experience and broader efforts to advance the interests of Africa and the Caribbean. The Accra conference further strengthened the political momentum behind cooperation on historical justice and the reform of systems that continue to shape global economic relations.
The two representatives also discussed practical areas for expanding cooperation, including aviation and connectivity, tourism, trade and investment, education, culture, migration, security, reparations and multilateral affairs.
“We discussed strengthening cooperation in aviation and connectivity, tourism, trade and investment, education, culture, migration and security, reparations and multilateral affairs,” Mr Sadiq said.
Aviation remains one of the concrete areas in which Ghana and Barbados have already taken steps to deepen their relationship. In 2022, the two countries signed an Air Services Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening bilateral aviation relations, expanding opportunities for designated airlines and promoting tourism, cultural travel and heritage tourism.
The relationship has also expanded into labour mobility. Ghana’s 2026 Budget identified Barbados among the countries with which Ghana had signed labour mobility agreements, reflecting efforts to create greater opportunities for Ghanaian workers and strengthen people-to-people exchanges.
The discussions therefore seek to build on an existing diplomatic relationship by moving cooperation towards areas with tangible economic and social benefits. Improved connectivity could support tourism and trade, while collaboration in education, culture and labour mobility could further deepen people-to-people links between Ghana and Barbados.
The engagement also forms part of the wider push to strengthen Africa-Caribbean relations, with both sides seeking to leverage their historical bonds to pursue contemporary priorities in economic cooperation, mobility, development and reparatory justice.
For Ghana and Barbados, the emphasis is increasingly on translating their shared heritage and political alignment into practical partnerships capable of delivering opportunities for citizens while strengthening the institutional and economic links between Africa and the Caribbean.
