Burkina Faso Ambassador invites Ghana for two major cultural events

The Ambassador of Burkina Faso to Ghana, David Kabré, has invited Ghana to participate in two of Burkina Faso’s flagship cultural events in 2026, a move aimed at deepening cultural diplomacy and strengthening people-to-people ties between the two neighbouring countries.

He extended the invitation to the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, during a courtesy call in Accra, where he reaffirmed Ouagadougou’s commitment to bolstering bilateral relations.

The events where Ghana is expected to feature prominently are the National Culture Week, slated for April 25 to May 2, 2026, and the 18th International Art and Craft Fair of Ouagadougou (SIAO), scheduled for October 30 to November 8, 2026.

Burkina Faso’s National Culture Week (SNC) is one of the country’s most important cultural festivals, bringing together artists, performers, writers, filmmakers, and traditional authorities from across the nation and the wider West African sub-region.

The week-long celebration showcases indigenous music, dance, theatre, fashion, cuisine, and literary arts, while also serving as a platform for dialogue on cultural preservation and creative industry development. Ghana’s participation would not only highlight its rich artistic heritage but also strengthen creative exchange between practitioners in both countries.

The International Art and Craft Fair of Ouagadougou, on the other hand, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s largest trade fairs dedicated to handicrafts and artisanal products. Held biennially in Ouagadougou, the fair attracts exhibitors and buyers from across the continent and beyond, offering a commercial platform for artisans, designers, and cultural entrepreneurs.

For Ghanaian creatives, participation presents opportunities to expand market access, forge cross-border partnerships, and promote made-in-Ghana products within the regional value chain of cultural goods.

Ambassador Kabré further hinted at a planned visit by Burkina Faso’s Minister of Culture to Ghana, a step intended to consolidate cooperation in culture, tourism, and creative industries. The initiative signals a deliberate effort to elevate cultural diplomacy as a pillar of bilateral engagement.

The visit affirms Burkina Faso’s commitment to sustaining the shared cultural bonds that transcend colonial borders, positioning Ouagadougou as a crucial partner in advancing regional integration through the arts. Ghana and Burkina Faso share deep historical, ethnic, and linguistic linkages, particularly among border communities in northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso, where festivals, chieftaincy traditions, and artisanal craftsmanship reflect intertwined identities.

Culturally and tourism-wise, the two countries have maintained steady engagement through cross-border festivals, traditional exchanges, and collaboration within the framework of regional bodies such as ECOWAS.

Tour operators frequently promote joint heritage circuits linking Ghana’s cultural landmarks, including sites in northern Ghana, with Burkina Faso’s renowned cultural capital, Ouagadougou, known for its vibrant arts scene and film culture. Both countries have also collaborated informally through participation in each other’s national festivals and creative industry platforms, fostering mutual visibility for artists and cultural enterprises.

Amoah; the Director for Tourism, Geoffrey Tamakloe; the Director for Human Resource Management, Otto Langmagne; and the Director for Culture and Creative Arts, Divine Owusu-Ansah , reflecting Ghana’s institutional readiness to deepen cooperation in the cultural and tourism sectors.
