French Ambassador expresses optimism over AI partnerships at National Day reception

French Ambassador to Ghana, Diarra Dime-Labille, has expressed confidence that closer cooperation between France and Ghana in artificial intelligence (AI) could accelerate innovation, strengthen research collaboration and support sustainable development across key sectors of Ghana’s economy.

France has established itself as one of the world’s leading AI ecosystems, ranking among Europe’s foremost hubs for artificial intelligence research, innovation and start-up development. The country is home to globally recognised AI companies such as Mistral AI and Hugging Face.

On the other hand, Ghana is laying the institutional foundations to become a continental leader in responsible AI. The country’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy provides a comprehensive roadmap for harnessing AI to drive economic growth, improve public service delivery, strengthen research and innovation, and accelerate digital transformation across key sectors including agriculture, healthcare, education, energy and governance

Against this backdrop, Ambassador Dime-Labille said France and Ghana are well positioned to leverage their respective strengths through joint research, academic exchange and innovation partnerships that deploy artificial intelligence to address shared development challenges.

“I would like to commend the work of the team at the French Embassy, the Department of Cooperation and Cultural Action, and the expanding cooperation between France and Ghana in the field of artificial intelligence.Together, we can play a leading role in the most major revolution of the 21st century. ” Ambassador Dime-Labille said.

She highlighted the AI for Sustainable Development (AI4SD) initiative as one of the flagship programmes advancing bilateral cooperation in education, research and innovation while promoting the responsible use of artificial intelligence to support the Sustainable Development Goals.

A key pillar of that collaboration is the Memorandum of Understanding between the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and DataIA at Université Paris-Saclay, which has established a framework for joint research, academic exchanges and innovation between leading institutions in both countries.

The partnership brings together researchers, faculty members and students from Ghanaian and French universities to co-develop AI-driven solutions to pressing environmental, agricultural and industrial challenges while strengthening scientific capacity and knowledge transfer.

Among its notable achievements is the development of AI-powered sensors capable of detecting chemical turbidity and removing toxic heavy metals from water bodies contaminated by illegal mining activities, demonstrating how artificial intelligence can contribute to environmental protection and sustainable natural resource management.

The collaboration has also produced a Crop Disease Detection Toolbox and a Smart Indigenous Weather Application, equipping farmers with predictive tools to improve crop management, increase agricultural productivity and strengthen food security in the face of climate variability.

Beyond agriculture, the partnership is extending into Ghana’s energy sector through collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to develop AI-based predictive systems capable of identifying potential transformer failures before they occur. The technology is expected to improve grid reliability, reduce maintenance costs and minimise power outages through predictive maintenance.

The expanding AI partnership reflects a broader shift in Ghana-France relations from traditional development cooperation towards innovation-led diplomacy, positioning artificial intelligence as a strategic pillar for future collaboration in research, higher education, digital transformation, climate resilience and industrial competitiveness.
