Abena Oppong-Asare

The just ended 2019 UK elections has seen Ghanaian-British politician, Abena Oppong-Asare win a seat in the British Parliament.

Ms. Oppong-Asare’s feat emulates that of Adam Afriyie, Sam Philip Gyimah, and Kwasi Alfred Addo Kwarteng.

Her capture of the Labour Party’s stronghold, Erith and Thamesmead makes her the first female Ghanaian-British MP in the UK.

Long-serving MP, Teresa Pearce, stepped down prior to this election, paving the way for Abena Oppong-Asare to succeed her.

The Labour Party candidate secured 19,882 votes to beat Joe Robertson of the Tory Party, who received 16,124 votes.

Abena Oppong-Asare for four years, was as a ward representative serving as a Bexley councillor until 2018.
