Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam named Industrial Energy Project of the Year 2026

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has been recognized as the Industrial Energy Project of the Year by the Africa Trade Chamber, cementing its status as one of the continent’s most transformative infrastructure initiatives.

The award highlights the dam’s critical role in advancing Africa’s energy capacity and industrial development.

The Acting Head of the Embassy of Ethiopia in Accra, Asaye Alemayehu (PhD), received the award on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), .Ing. Ashebir Balcha during the ceremony in Accra on 29 January 2026.

Located on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, GERD is Africa’s largest hydropower project, with an installed capacity of 6,450 megawatts once fully operational. The dam’s reservoir spans approximately 74 billion cubic meters, making it a key resource for water management and electricity generation in the region.

The project is considered a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s economic growth strategy, aiming to provide reliable, sustainable power to millions of homes and industries. By tapping into the hydropower potential of the Blue Nile, GERD is expected to transform Ethiopia into a regional energy hub, enabling electricity exports to neighboring countries.

The dam’s significance extends beyond Ethiopia’s borders. As Africa continues to grapple with energy deficits, GERD represents a bold step toward improving the continent’s energy security and supporting industrial expansion. The project demonstrates how large-scale infrastructure can foster regional integration and shared economic benefits.

The Africa Trade Awards recognized GERD for its contribution to expanding Africa’s industrial energy base. The award emphasizes the dam’s role in supporting long-term economic growth, trade development, and regional cooperation, while underscoring Ethiopia’s leadership in continental energy initiatives.

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), the entity responsible for GERD’s construction and management, was formally acknowledged for its instrumental role in bringing the project to fruition. The dam reflects EEP’s commitment to advancing modern, sustainable energy solutions across Africa.

The award ceremony brought together a distinguished audience, including H.E. Américo Ramos, President of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe; H.E. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana; and numerous government officials, industry leaders, and media representatives.

GERD’s energy-generating capacity is expected to play a transformative role in Ethiopia’s industrial sector. By providing a reliable source of electricity, the dam will enable the growth of manufacturing, mining, and other energy-intensive industries, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and boosting economic resilience.

Beyond power generation, GERD has significant environmental and social implications. Its reservoir will contribute to flood control, irrigation, and water management, supporting agricultural productivity and providing long-term benefits for communities in the Nile Basin.

The Africa Trade Awards, established to celebrate exceptional contributions to economic and industrial development across the continent, recognize projects and entities that demonstrate innovation, impact, and sustainability. GERD’s recognition reflects its status as a model for large-scale, transformative energy projects in Africa.
