The First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Mahama, has been invited by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump to participate in a two-day international summit focused on ensuring an equitable digital future for children worldwide.
The event, titled Fostering the Future Together: Global Coalition Summit, is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. and will convene dignitaries from 45 countries alongside representatives from 28 leading technology companies. Discussions will center on leveraging education and technology to empower children, while also establishing safeguards to guide the responsible use of artificial intelligence among young learners.
Major global technology firms expected to participate include Google, OpenAI, Meta, xAI, Adobe, Microsoft, and Zoom. These companies have played a significant role in advancing artificial intelligence across sectors, particularly in education, where AI-powered tools are increasingly shaping teaching, learning, and student engagement globally.
Speakers from participating countries are also expected to outline national strategies for integrating artificial intelligence into education systems. The sessions will highlight efforts to enhance digital literacy, strengthen learning outcomes, and build the capacity of students to thrive in technology-driven environments.
Further discussions will focus on implementing innovative technologies to expand educational opportunities for children, training educators and parents to effectively navigate digital tools, and designing advanced learning environments that prepare future generations for emerging global challenges.
Ahead of the summit, Mrs. Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to harnessing artificial intelligence to empower children while strengthening safeguards to protect them from exploitation and unethical use of technology. She emphasized that responsible AI deployment must remain a shared global priority.
In a statement issued prior to the summit, Mrs. Mahama noted, “Ghana stands ready to ensure technology becomes a force for empowerment, not endangerment, for every child. Our children’s future is our shared moral duty and generational responsibility.”
Ghana has already begun implementing several initiatives aimed at integrating artificial intelligence into education and strengthening digital literacy among children. In 2025, the International Community School partnered with the Ghana Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Good Future Foundation to roll out a digital literacy initiative as part of efforts to enhance quality education.
Additionally, Google announced a $37 million investment in Africa, which includes the development of speech recognition and artificial intelligence tools for Ghanaian languages such as Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani, particularly targeting non-standard speech to improve accessibility for learners across diverse backgrounds. These innovations aim to ensure that children in rural communities, as well as those with disabilities, can effectively access educational content.
Further strengthening Ghana’s AI-driven education strategy, the Ministry of Education Ghana collaborated with Playlab.ai, Transforming Teaching, Education & Learning, and the Mastercard Foundation to develop AI-powered tools aligned with Ghana’s national curriculum.
The initiative also received subsidised support from Amazon Web Services and Anthropic, enabling teachers to access AI applications free of charge, while training programmes, teacher manuals, and learner materials are being supported under an existing grant agreement with the Ministry of Education aimed at advancing digital transformation in classrooms nationwide.
