Rwandan President Arrives Ahead Of ECOWAS Summit

14602545891_1cd206d36aRwandan President, Paul Kagame, arrived in Ghana on Tuesday ahead of the two-day ECOWAS Summit to be hosted by President John Dramani Mahama from July 10 to 11.

President Kagame and his entourage were met on arrival at the Airport by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mr Kwasi Quartey.

He is expected to meet with President Mahama later on Tuesday.

The mid-year Summit of ECOWAS, according to a statement issued by the Presidency, will consider a Report on the Community’s main activities and projects, over the first half of this year, to be presented by the ECOWAS Commission President, Mr. Kadre Desire Ouedraogo.

The Summit is also expected to discuss a recommendation for the introduction of biometric ID cards for all ECOWAS citizens, and the abolition of residence permit requirements for all citizens within Member-States, the current Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, as well as other pertinent issues.

In addition to the leaders of the 15-Member States, the Presidents of three nations bordering the ECOWAS sub-region – Mauritania, Cameroon and Chad – as well as the President of the African Union Commission and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, have also been invited to attend the Summit.

The 45th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, will be preceded in Accra on Tuesday, July 8, by a Mediation and Security Meeting of ECOWAS, involving Foreign and Defence Ministers from Member-States of the Community.
